Section 1.1 Assignment Part A: A Man Who Had No Eyes

Introduction
Making predictions about the characters, plot, setting, or outcome of a story is an excellent active reading strategy. As an active reader you want to read carefully to see if your predictions are correct. It's like predicting the ending of the last Harry Potter book, or who will win the Stanley Cup, or what will happen in a season finale. Making predictions is something that we do all the time, and is something that quickly engages us when reading.

Read actively and enjoy the story!

Instructions

1) Reading to Write Well

Go to your Sightlines 10 textbook, and turn to "A Man Who Had No Eyes" on page 328. Before reading, fill in the Pre-reading section on the "Reading to Write Well" template. (HINT: Don't forget to look at the title and the author for possible clues.)

When finished with the pre-reading section, begin reading "A Man Who Had No Eyes." Read to the bottom of page 328 and stop. Fill in the Reading section of the template. (HINT: Focus on character and setting, as well as possible conflict, as you answer the questions or make predictions.)

When you're finished reading the story, complete the rest of the Reading section and then go on and complete the Post-reading section.

Submit your completed template.

You can use this template and then add to it in subsequent sections of the assignment.

2) Reflection Paragraph

Complete a personal reflection. Your reflection should be a solid, well-developed paragraph of approximately 125 words in which you write about the reading strategy presented to you and how it helped you as you read "A Man Who Had No Eyes." Think about how you can apply this strategy in other situations. Talk about other reading strategies you may have used, such as context clues.
