The only characters who show noticeable change during the novel are David and Rosalind. David finally separates himself from his community and from his father, which he had found hard to do. He never wanted to ask if his father was with the search party because he was not able to accept that his father might be hunting him down. He found out by accident through Petra, when Spiderman asks if his father is with the search party. Yet at the end David, realizes that he needs to be separated from the Old People to live his life fully.

Rosalind softens at the end, and takes down the amour she has used to protect herself. On the flight to the new world David, looks at her and says she is like a flower opening.

Michael, a leader throughout the story, remains a leader in the end; Petra is enthusiastic and child-like from beginning to end. Alan is spiteful and controlling in each encounter; Uncle Axel is open-minded and a constant support to David, and Joseph Strorm is righteous and strict right until his death.
