Module 4: A Thousand Voices - Discovering Poetry and Short Stories

Section 4.2 Assignment Part C: Seeing the Sights Collage

Introduction

If you have ever travelled to a foreign country, then you know how it feels when you first get off the plane and wander through the crowd to pick up your luggage and get out to the street to set off on your adventure. The world seems brighter, louder, and more intense than it is at home. Mostly this is the result of seeing a whole new culture for the first time—your senses are over-stimulated! Poetry can be like this too, especially when the poem includes the colours, textures, and feelings of a way of life different from your own. Like a traveller, you get to experience the images and imagery of another culture.

Let's consider two poems that will take us to another culture.

In "The Streets of Purple Cloth," by Karen Connelly, a female speaker wanders the streets of a foreign city taking in the sights and sounds, experiencing a wide range of emotion, until she is finally comfortably out of the city. Colour plays a large part in this poetic journey.

In "Day of the Bride," by Joy Kogawa, a Japanese bride experiences an overwhelming traditional ceremony only to end up plunked back in her small, plain apartment. Descriptive details, simile and metaphor are much at work in this poem.

Instructions

Begin by reading the two poems. Remember to read each poem 3 times, one of those times reading aloud. "The Streets of Purple Cloth" is on page 240, and "Day of the Bride" is on page 307 of your Sightlines 10 textbook.

Which poem did you "see" the best? Select this ONE poem to work with.

Your challenge now is to try to bring to life some of the sights you encountered. In a collage of images or in a work of original art, created on paper or on a computer, put together a poster that represents what you see in the poem.

Your visual collage must include:
