Introduction

All throughout these first two Acts we have seen references to dark and light. This is a motif. A motif is a recurring image in the play that helps the audience share in the emotions of the characters.

Instructions

There are many references to light and dark in Act II.ii. After looking at the examples on the “Light and Dark Motif” sheets, complete the following charts with at least two such references for each motif - two light and two dark.

• Select an appropriate quote or several quotes. Indicate the act, scene, and line number for each quote used.
• Explain how the quote(s) fits into the scene.
• Tell why the quote(s) is meaningful.
• Draw a sketch of either the image created or a symbol which might represent this image.

ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

• Be sure the quotes you select contain either a light or dark motif.
• Your context can be expressed in a clearly written sentence explaining how the quote(s) fit into the scene.
• The significance of the quote should be expressed and explained in at least two sentences. Be sure to tell why the quote is meaningful.
• Your sketch can be drawn by hand, an image from a magazine, or off the Internet, etc. Make sure the connection between the image and the quotation is obvious, and attribute any sources used.
