Section 5.2 Assignment Part C: Talk of These Sad Things |
Introduction
Escalus brings the play to its conclusion with these words:
A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show its head.
Go hence to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
The line “Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished” is pointing to the characters responsible for this tragic conclusion. The many references to fate in this play may suggest that Romeo and Juliet's death was destined or fated to happen. Yet, you could also argue that other characters were also responsible for this tragic end.
Instructions
In a well-developed paragraph of approximately 125 words, argue which character in the play you believe is most responsible for the deaths of the young lovers.
Note: You don't need to think only about Act V in your response. Consider the whole play. |
