Module 1: Career Investigation

Lesson #3: Understanding Apprenticeship in Schools

You now have a sense of what the apprenticeship is and what you need to do to start the process. In this unit you will look at Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) to find out how it works.

What is Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA)?

SSA is a career program that allows students to begin training in their trade prior to graduation. Here are the steps to becoming a SSA student:

  1. Complete the Introduction to Secondary School Apprenticeship course.
  2. Determine what trade yo would like to pursue.
  3. Find a job in the trade, with a certified journeyperson (or equivalent) to sponsor you.
  4. Contact the school counselor or apprenticeship coordinator to register as an SSA student (you may do this at any time during the school year).
  5. Obtain all registration forms etc... from the coordinator
  6. Return all completed forms and begin work.

**Another option you may want to consider is Duel Credit or ACE/IT programs. These programs are college level technical training that you can take prior to high school graduation. These programs work with apprenticeship to enable you to obtain certification in your trade.

If you have not already done so, make an appointment with your Apprenticeship Coordinator or counselor to complete a graduation plan that could include a Secondary School Apprenticeshp and/or a Dual Credit program.

Hidden Apprentices
The Secondary School Apprenticeship program is not only for students wishing to enter the working world. If you are a high school student working part-time in a trade you are probably a "hidden apprentice." If this is you, you might want to consider registering as SSA so you can:

  • be eligible for a $1000 scholarship
  • get a head start on earning your trade certification

Talk to your school counselor to find out what types of work qualify to see if you should register in a SSA program.

Secondary School Apprenticeship Credits

If you are in the SSA program you can earn 16 credits in addition to the 2 credits you will earn for this course. You will earn 4 elective credits for every 120 hours you work in your trade to a maximum of 480 hours.

  • SSA 11A (120 hours)
  • SSA 11B (240 hours)
  • SSA 12A (360 hours)
  • SSA 12B (480 hours)

You will be working in your chosen trade as part of the work-based component of the program.

Scholarship Requirements

Secondary school apprentices can qualify for a $1,000 scholarship if they:

  • been registered in a school district Secondary School Apprenticeship Program prior to graduation
  • graduated with a Grade 12 Dogwood Diploma or Adult Dogwood
  • successfully completed SSA 11A, SSA 11B, SSA 12A, and SSA 12B
  • maintained a C+ average or better on Grade 12 numbered courses
  • continued working or training full-time in the trade 5 months after secondary school graduation or have 1100 hrs reported to ITA.
