Guided Practice 4.1 D1: Comparison Notes for "Keeper n’ Me" and "A Secret Lost in the Water"

Introduction

Now that you have read the two stories, and you know that you are going to be asked to compare them, it is time to start organizing your ideas about the two readings."Keeper n' Me" is a memoir; the other reading, "A Secret Lost in the Water", is a short story. They share in common a first person telling of an emotional story from the narrator's past. In "Keeper n' Me", Richard Wagamese remembers the terrible separation he experienced from his family and his culture as a child sent to foster home after foster home. In "A Secret Lost in the Water", Roch Carrier looks back with a new appreciation for his father's gift for divining water.

Instructions

One of the easiest ways to prepare to compare is to make some reflective notes about both stories. So let's take a look at the story comparison template. In each space, make point-form notes that address each heading. For example, under the heading "Characters," make notes about the main characters - ask yourself "what are the most important things to note about the central characters?" You can include interesting quotations, personal reflections, questions, and whatever else comes to mind.
